Mental Health and Wellness Resources for May

May is Mental Health Awareness Month.

Though I usually write about creativity, this post is dedicated to mental health and wellness; because it’s hard to be creative when you’re struggling to be okay. Life has been showing us all some really challenging realities, and we can all use a little support – or a lot.

I’ll keep this post succinct; not because I don’t have oodles and bunches to say about mental health and wellness, but because it’s so important to me that I just want to get these resources on a list quickly – if you need them, you need them.

Crisis resources for mental health

  • Dial 988 or visit 988lifeline.org – Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
  • Dial 1-800-799-7233 or visit National Domestic Violence Hotline –  Be sure to clear your browser history if you are in an unsafe situation.
  • Crisis Intervention Team – This is usually a local number you can look up. The crisis intervention team can show up in times of crisis instead of calling police. They are trained to de-escalate a crisis situation.

General mental health and wellness resources

  • NAMI.org – I love NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness). Their courses are so incredibly helpful, they offer a lot of different types of support.
  • Mental Health First Aid and Youth Mental Health First Aid – This is a really great certification course, I highly recommend – especially if you work with youth.
  • SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) – Resources for substance use treatment, veteran services, and much more.
  • psychologytoday.comSearch for a counselor or therapist using filters like location, type of treatment, etc.

Support groups

Life sometimes expect us to power through grief, pain, or loss “like a boss” when we’re actually just depleted, struggling, and need some support.

We all deserve to find appropriate and accessible mental healthcare and support. I hope these resources give you a starting point for connecting with others, or with a trusted therapist or support group.

Wishing you trustworthy support in your mental health and wellness support journey. ❤️
